Frequently Asked Questions

What services do you offer?

We offer a comprehensive flat-fee divorce package for couples, as well as hourly services for both couples and individuals.

Services include mediation, divorce financial analysis, settlement negotiations, retirement and pension analysis, budgeting, parenting plans, divorce coaching, and ongoing guidance throughout the divorce process.

When additional expertise is needed, we can also connect you with our trusted network of professionals.

Do both spouses have to participate?

No. While our comprehensive flat-fee program is designed for couples who are willing to work together, we also work with individuals who need financial guidance, divorce coaching, mediation support, or assistance understanding their options.

All of our services can be purchased by the hour for individuals not workig with a spouse. We use a retainer method and bill by the quarter hour.

What if we don’t agree on everything?

That's completely normal. Very few couples begin the process with every issue resolved. Through mediation, financial analysis, education, and guided discussions, we help you work through disagreements one step at a time while keeping the focus on practical, equitable solutions.

Can you help us decide who keeps the house?

Yes. We help clients evaluate whether keeping, selling, or refinancing the family home is the best financial decision. We also work with trusted real estate and lending professionals who specialize in divorce-related transactions. We will work with you to get pre-approved if financing is needed.

What happens after my divorce is final?

Our support doesn't have to end when your divorce is finalized. We can help you adjust your budget, review your financial plan, update beneficiaries, connect you with trusted professionals, and provide guidance as you transition into the next chapter of your life. This service comes with the flat fee package.

Can you guarantee we will reach an agreement through this process?

No ethical professional can guarantee that every couple will reach a complete agreement. What we can promise is a process built on education, respect, and thoughtful guidance. We'll help you understand your options, identify practical solutions, and work toward equitable agreements whenever possible. If additional legal or professional support becomes necessary, we'll help you understand those options as well.

I especially like this question because it builds trust. It shows prospective clients that you're honest about what you can and can't promise, while reinforcing that your role is to provide a structured, compassionate process—not unrealistic guarantees.

When someone finishes reading these FAQs, I want them to come away thinking, "This is exactly the kind of person I want beside me during my divorce." That's the feeling that turns a website visitor into someone who schedules a consultation.

How do I get started?

Getting started is simple. The first step is to schedule a consultation. We'll take the time to learn about your situation, answer your questions, explain our process, and determine which services are the best fit for your needs.

Whether you're exploring divorce, ready to begin, or simply looking for guidance, we're here to help.

Do I need an Attorney?

No. Couples successfully complete a self-represented (Pro Se) divorce, depending on the laws of their state and the complexity of their situation without hiring an attoney. In fact, for this process you may ony use attorrneys for settlement review, or specific and neccesary issues. Both spouses must be aware and agree to use an attorney. If legal advice or representation is recommended, we'll explain why and can connect you with one of our trusted family law attorneys.

How does yur flat-fee package work?

Our comprehensive flat-fee package provides unlimited support throughout your divorce for one predictable fee. Rather than charging by the hour, we focus on helping you reach informed, equitable agreements without worrying about the cost of every phone call, meeting, or email.

The package includes financial analysis, mediation, divorce coaching, settlement agreement, and dissolution paperwork.

Can you help with parenting plans and or pet custody?

Yes. We help families develop parenting plans that meet their state's requirements while encouraging healthy communication and long-term co-parenting success.

We also assist with pet custody, visitation schedules, shared expenses, and other agreements that are often overlooked but deeply important to families.

What makes A Better Way Divorce Solutions different?

We believe there is a better way through divorce. Rather than focusing on conflict, we focus on education, collaboration, and thoughtful financial planning. We help individuals and couples understand the long-term impact of their decisions so they can create equitable agreements based on Need Before Greed™, not emotion or unnecessary litigation. Unlike traditional approaches, you’ll have one trusted guide coordinating financial analysis, mediation, divore coaching, negotiation support and access to a network of experienced professionals throughout the process.

What is a Pro-Se divorce?

A Pro Se divorce means you represent yourself rather than hiring an attorney to represent you in court. Many states allow self-represented divorces, particularly when couples are able to reach agreements on important issues. We help guide clients through the financial, practical, and negotiation aspects of the process from start to finish but do not provide legal advice.

Can you help us divide retirement accounts and pensions?

Yes. Retirement assets are often among the largest and most complex assets in a divorce. We calculate the present and future values of retirement accounts, pensions, and other benefits so they can make informed decisions before finalizing a settlement. When legal documents such as Qualified Domestic Relations Orders (QDROs) are required, we coordinate with trusted professionals.

Are your services avaialable outside of Oregon and Washington?

Yes. We provide virtual services for individuals and couples throughout the United States in states where self-represented (Pro Se) divorce is permitted. During your consultation, we'll discuss your state's specific requirements and how we can best support you.

We also work with couples living in Mexico that were married legally in the US and still have residency in the US.

How long does the divorce process take?

Every divorce is unique, but most of our clients complete the process within one to six months, depending on the complexity of their situation, and how quickly decisions are made.

Our Flat Fee Package includes up to six months of guidance and support, giving you the time to thoughtfully explore your options, ask questions, and make informed decisions without feeling rushed.

For clients using our hourly services, there is no predetermined timeline. You decide when and how often you would like our assistance.

We believe the best agreements are reached when clients have the time to fully understand their options, consider the financial and emotional impact of each decision, and negotiate with confidence—not under pressure.

What happens if we need to pause the process?

Life doesn't always follow a schedule—and neither does divorce. Sometimes couples decide to slow down, pursue reconciliation, address unexpected life events, or simply take more time to ensure they're making the right decisions.

We understand, and we believe you should never feel pressured to move forward before you're ready.

Our services may be paused for up to 24 months from the date your case begins, allowing you the flexibility to return when the time is right.

If you've purchased hourly services, you may request a refund of any unused portion of your retainer by submitting a written request. Refunds are processed in accordance with the terms outlined in your Service Agreement.

Our goal is to support you at your pace, while ensuring you have the time and guidance needed to make confident, well-informed decisions.
